JETAA Midnight Curling Report

JETAA Toronto’s second annual curling event held Saturday, February 16th, 2013, was yet again a sweeping success as thirty-odd participants took to the ice at High Park Curling Club for a rockin’ evening! No puns intended.

Despite the blizzard, a solid crew of JET Alumni, JAVA members, (including a few bona fide working-holiday visitors from Japan), and assorted friends, turned out for the evening. Festivities began at Loons Pub out in the Roncey area, where some pre-game socializing was had over drinks and bites.

From there, we headed en masse to the curling club, where we readied ourselves physically and mentally for the sporting challenge ahead. The popularity of Saturday evening curling was evident as the place was packed with its members!

After suiting up, Josh, our instructor, led us to the ice, explained the rules and scoring, showed us a few basic moves, and was even so kind as to point out exactly which muscles would feel sore the following day. Nevertheless, a few of us still managed to take a wee tumble on the ice!

From there, we split into four lanes with six to eight people in each. It was a lively hour full of rock-sliding, sweeping, and yelling “Harder, harder!!!”.

A definite arigatou to Afia VanHorne, JETAA Toronto’s 2012-13 Sports Coordinator extraordinaire, for putting this event together!

Thank you as well to Nick Jones, representing both JETAA and JAVA, for capturing various displays of athletic prowess as well as laughter-inducing tumbles in his photographs!

See you at next year’s curling event!
