The breathtaking cherry blossoms and beautiful weather were in perfect harmony for JETAA Toronto’s 5th Annual Hanami Picnic in High Park on Saturday, May 7th. Thanks to the support of members from U of T’s JCSA and JAVA, there were over 150 people in attendance throughout the day.
Our group arrived early enough to lay down the large blue tarps and claim our territory in what was undoubtedly one of the best spots in High Park for prime cherry blossom viewing. Beneath the picturesque flowers, everyone enjoyed a potluck-style meal, which featured an array of food, drinks and popular Japanese snacks.
Some sat and engaged in fun conversation, while others tossed frisbees around and played badminton against a backdrop of amazing Japanese cherry blossoms.
With such a strong showing, our group attracted media attention from OMNI Television News, who interviewed a few people in attendance and allowed everyone to record a special message of support for the people of Japan.
In keeping with the theme of solidarity, at 2:46 pm, all in attendance observed a moment of silence for those who lost their lives during the devastating earthquake in Japan’s Tohoku region. Also remembered were those still missing, those who have been displaced by the earthquake and those contributing to the rebuilding efforts.
Overall, JETAA Toronto’s Hanami Picnic in High Park was a great success that brought together a variety of communities to share in a wonderful Japanese cultural tradition.
