A Farewell To The 2013 JETs

To all of the newly departed 2013 JETs,

I was exactly where you are now 5 years ago. I was also one the youngest people in the room. I had spent that summer travelling around Europe. As a consequence, I had missed all the pre-departure activities. The Farewell Reception of 2008 was the only pre-departure activity I attended. I spoke zero Japanese. I had no teaching experience. Actually, I’m not sure what the selection committee saw in me as a candidate. I was genki but felt completely unprepared. Everyone else around me was far into their Japanese lessons. Many seemed to have been to Japan before. Some have even previously taught overseas. (more…)

Call For Submissions: JAVA/JETAA Art Exhibition

JAVA Toronto and JETAA Toronto invites artists in all stages of career to submit artwork reflecting the theme “Middle Distance” to their joint 2013 Exhibition.

Nakamichi / Middle Distance is an exhibition, which seeks to include (but not limit) a cross-section of diverse work from both Japanese and English speaking artists that can illustrate similarities and differences between cultures. The theme is open to interpretation but some concepts to consider are as follows:

  • ŸA point between foreground and background, part of a pictorial representation
  • ŸTransitory aspects of everyday life
  • ŸA point in time
  • ŸMahyamaka – A Buddhist concept which stipulates a position between metaphysical claims that things either exist or do not exist. (more…)
