The 2016 JETAA Canada National Conference was hosted by JETAA British Columbia and Yukon this past June 10th-12th in Vancouver. Two executive members from each chapter across the country were invited to attend the event, as well as members of CLAIR New York, the JETAA Canada Representative, as well as the three JETAA Country Representatives from the US.

The conference, sometimes shortened to “CanCon”, serves as a great opportunity for the Canadian chapters to learn from each other, communicate important information directly with CLAIR, and also learn what chapters are doing in other countries.

This year I was honoured to be one of the two JETAA Toronto executive members sent to the conference, along with Carl Sachs, one of our Co-Chairs. It was my first experience at a JETAA Canada Conference, and a wonderful experience altogether.

Welcome back returning JETs!

On October 24th, in partnership with the Consulate-General of Japan in Toronto, JETAA Toronto hosted our annual Re-Entry Conference. Aiming to re-integrate newly returned JET participants into Canadian life, a series of informational and advisory sessions were facilitated by sempai JETAA members. Topics included Japanese restaurants and shopping in Toronto, dealing with reverse culture shock, resume and interview skills, as well as tactics for finding volunteer and employment opportunities. The conference began with a welcome reception on Thursday evening, during which JETAA delegates from Alaska, Miami, to Honolulu (also Ottawa and Toronto!) got to know each other as we enjoyed a delicious meal. This was followed by rooftop hopping in Detroit’s vibrant Greektown neighbourhood. (more…)

Toronto is lucky to have a robust JETAA chapter with genki and dedicated executive members who work hard to make JETAA Toronto one of the most active chapters in North America. There are few things we value more, though, than the opportunity to get together with representatives from the other Canadian chapters at the JETAA Canada National Conference. Every year our delegates at the Canada Conference learn a great deal from other chapters, returning with a wealth of innovation for JETAA activities and programs.

That is the real value of the annual JETAA national conference: the way it provides a forum for the various chapters to share ideas and activities, which results in broadening everyone’s perspectives on how to best support our particular chapter.

It’s that time of year again when a fresh batch of ALTs and CIRs get ready to fly half way around the world to Japan. As is tradition, the Consulate-General of Japan in Toronto and JETAA joined forces at the Japan Foundation on Saturday June 27th and Sunday June 28th to hold a pre-departure orientation (PDOT). The weekend was packed with useful information for the 48 shortlisted JETs and 20 hopefuls to help them build a clearer picture of what their experiences might be like in Japan.
