Boston Career Forum Update

JETAA Toronto is making its first road trip to the largest Japanese-English bilingual career forum in the world.  Why not join us, a couple of cars worth of former JETs and Japanese folk, as we explore the beautiful city of Boston while seeing what a next career step in Japan would look like?

Building on the success of our July information session, JETAA Toronto will be holding our final preparation session on Tuesday October 11th at 7 pm at UofT’s OISE Building (252 Bloor West), room 3312.  Come out and talk preparations with us while getting a sense of who’s going and what you should expect.

Whether you intend to attend the prep session or not, please contact us at career@staging.jetaatoronto.ca to get more info and confirm your place on the road trip.

About the Boston Career Forum:

http://www.careerforum.net/event/bos/?lang=E

It’s the real deal, with more than 200 companies, including many of the largest domestic and foreign-owned companies in Japan.  Hiring targets exist and many former JETs have received dream offers and are now working at major companies around Japan and beyond.

You have to register for the event in advance, and many companies line up a full slate of candidate interviews months in advance, so preparing in advance is key.

Former Toronto/Hokkaido JET Holly Long accepted an offer at global accounting giant Deloitte LLC’s Tokyo office that she received at the BCF in 2015.  Here’s what she had to say about the market for former JETs at the Boston Career Forum:

  • “There is a change going on at many international firms, banks and tech companies in Japan. They are actively seeking individuals with international experience, education and language skills. I was shocked at how actively I was recruited – if I had been more prepared I could have walked away with many more offers. The BCF is an amazing place for JETs with high Japanese language skills to find a position with a major global or Japanese firm.”

Travel:

We’ll aim to leave Toronto at 7am from an easily accessible TTC station.  We’ll aim to leave the BCF at noon on Sunday and get home by11pm.  We’ll aim to put 4 people in each car, in which case every passenger should chip $120 round trip to cover gas, vehicle depreciation, and other vehicle-related expenses.  If you’ve got a car and want to fill it up with good paying people, let us know and we’ll fit you in.

The BCF will provide a travel scholarship of $200 US to those who apply by 10/31 with a Japanese-language resume.  JETAA Toronto will be working with JETAA New England to line up some extracurricular fun to really make the most out of our limited time in Boston.

Language Expectations:

The BCF is a bilingual career fair, open to all who register in advance.  There are no language tests or firm requirements.  Everyone who attends will have strengths and weaknesses in Japanese and English, but professional (not necessarily fluent) Japanese skills are desirable.  Interviews will most often be conducted in Japanese and they will be difficult to secure without a Japanese resume.  If you have a Japanese resume already, great.  If you need help with yours, JETAA Toronto can refer you to a Toronto-based Japanese native speaker and resume wizard who is happy to translate resumes from English into Japanese, polish those already translated, or provide 1-on-1 Japanese interview prep sessions for a competitive rate.  Let us know if you’d like the referral.

Again, please confirm your interest or have your questions answered at career@staging.jetaatoronto.ca.  Hope to see you at the prep session on October 11th and at the BCF in November!
