I never knew quite how badly I wanted to throw an axe until I held one in my hands. I mean, I suppose I’d had an inkling. (I think anyone who has ever been anything remotely into fantasy has imagined swinging swords and throwing a whole range of sharp pointed objects). But it wasn’t until this September’s JETAA Axe-Throw-Houdai over at the Backyard Axe Throwing League that my chance was finally realized. All within a safe learning environment and with competent instructors! Technically, they were instructor-referees, and were AWESOME. Thank you Cookie and Millsy! They made the entire night a lot of fun and provided lots of laughs, even if even they couldn’t quite save my game. It turns out axe throwing requires a lot of core strength in the torso.
How to throw an axe: Hold the axe in your dominant hand, cup with your other hand and cross the thumbs (but don’t grip too hard). Bring the axe up, lining the head with the middle of the target. In one solid motion, bring the axe over your head and then immediately lean your whole body forward. Release when your hands return to their original aiming position. And then, hopefully, your axe gives a satisfying sound as it sinks into the wooden bulls-eye. Or maybe not.

We all had our mini-successes, some more than others. At this particular venue you can imbibe freely in a relaxed atmosphere. We were also celebrating a JETAA member’s birthday, complete with fresh-made tarts. When we finally got down to tournament time, the victor who emerged was none other than our Community Liaison, Nick Jones. I don’t think there was a prize other than bragging rights, but really when you come down to it, I’m fairly certain a grand time was had by all. Due to the popular turnout, it seems that axe throwing is well on its way to becoming an annual event. Hope to see you out next time.
